Sister Remi, former OLA Kindergarten teacher, at the BVM Motherhouse in Iowa in July, 2003. (Photo courtesy of Charlene Jancik) This statue was carved by Sister Remi. She gave it as a gift to Sister Florence, Mother Superior of OLA, who held it gripped it tightly in her hand on the day of the fire. When Sr. Florence passed away, it was returned to Sr. Remi. She donated it to the museum room of the Sisters of Charity BVM Motherhouse, which has a display of gifts from the nuns who reside there. She proudly showed this statute to Charlene and Linda of the Friends of OLA. Says Charlene: 'We were very touched to see it was a relic from the fire that she held on to all of this time.' The nuns do not have much in their rooms, but this is one thing that Sister Remi has kept to this day. (Photo courtesy of Jason Fout) A group of survivors of the OLA fire met on March 28, 2003. For some, it was the first time seeing former classmates in over 40 years. Their organization, Friends of OLA, includes survivors, their family members, and others with an interest in the Our Lady of the Angels fire. The organization was originated by Linda Maffiola in the early 1990s. They elected officers, collected donations, discussed objectives and future plans, viewed old photos, and discussed old times.
Back Row: Betti (Marino) Wasek, Frank Consiglio, Matt Plovanich, Andrew Lego, Tom Raymond, Jim Grosso
Front Row: Chuck Gerlach, Charlene (Campanale-Benza) Jancik, Luciana (Mordini) Kuziw, Johnnie (Tasmer) Fuller, John Raymond.
