I am a granddaughter of Sam Tortorice. I lived with him until he passed of cancer when I was 5 years old. He was my best friend and I spent every possible moment with him until he passed. I heard the story of him saving the children almost every night of my young life and wanted anyone interested to know that every morning I brought my stuffed animals downstairs to his bed, sat on his lap to count black birds and loved him more than I could ever explain. Prior to his death my mom told him to squeeze her hand if he knew that we loved him and he did. I have thought of every one of the children that passed and all of the survivors my entire life and wanted to send all of you love. The sufferings of that day have not been forgotten and the prayers have continued. I hope all of you are leading happy lives.
