About me: |
I was 11 yrs old at the time of the fire & vividly recall the radio & television news coverage. For the entire month of December there were stories about the victims & the survivors.
In 1965 I entered Mundelein College as a freshman. Michelle McBride was a classmate. She was very funny, but her humor was edgy & sarcastic. She was very smart, but seemed to struggle with the work.
I saw her one night in the dorm lobby, all dressed up in a beautiful matching hat & coat. She told me she was going to a memorial Mass @OLA. (It was December 1, 1965) I stupidly said, "how nice, you'll be seeing all your friends." She replied in a flat voice: "they all died in the fire." When her book was released in 1979 I read it cover to cover in 3 days. I finally realized what she had never talked about; the terror & pain she experienced. My thoughtless remark only added to her emotional pain. Now she walks with the angels. God rest her & give her peace.
