About me: |
I didn't live in the neighborhood at ther time of the fire, but my dad owned a small house at 910 N. Pulaski Rd. He used to bring my mother and sister with every month when he collected the rent. The last names of the tenants were Stassi and Lyttek, and I remember that the Lyttek daughter was killed at age 14 during a fall while washing the attic window of the house. It happened shortly after the fire, too. My dad had a part-time job as a cabdriver, so he used to take us all around. I vaguely remember him taking us past the burned-out school. I was 8 yrs. old at the time and was spooked by it. We lived at 26th & Pulaski and the school I went to was Good Shepherd(Catholic) and it was very similar in structure to the old OLA bldg. I also knew a lot of the businesses around OLA, (especially Jimmy's hot dogs and Burp"s!) I also worked with 2 survivors of the fire, Rose DE Rosa, and Joe Parat, who said the bodies were laid out in his driveway. Funny how these memories come out after all these years.
Love,
Carol M.
