My name is John M. Paolella. I am a graduate of OLA, class of 1956.
My family lived directly accross the school at 910 N. Avers Ave. Our home was used by the media on that horrible day in an attempt to organize and transmit the news. My mother, Rose Paolella, was instrumental in assisting fire victims as they lay on our front lawn awaiting help. She also took the kindergartners into our basement to await their parents as they frantically searched for children.
My sister Patricia, Cousins JoAnn and John Pellettiere, and Kenneth Ferra were OLA students at the time of the fire and all miraculously escaped!
This event was a tragedy not only for those who attended the school and the parish, but also for our entire neighborhood. It forever changed our lives.
