About me: |
Chicago Avenue was a great neighborhood to grow up. I lived on Ridgeway and Huron and went to Ryerson grade school. I went to catacism classes at Our Lady of the Angels on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays. In highschool I attended Kero(sp)class (same as CCD, I guess)on Tuesday nights. Had many friends attending OLA. I was a sophmore, coming home from school in car. We dropped one of the guys on Avers and Iowa at about 2:30. Heard a bell on our way to Chicago Ave. I thought it was a prepatory dismissal bell, same as Ryerson. Found about fire 15 or 20 minutes later. Hurried back. I have spent my life with the memory. As with others, family would never talk about it. They had friends who lost children, and thought any mention would bring back the bad feelings.
