About me: |
I was living in Wisconsin and in kindergarten at the time, nonetheless, this fire made a big impression on me as I remember hearing about it on the radio and my parents talking about it. I remember it as though it happened last year. It was all you heard about on the news for some time. It was the first national event in my life. In 1981 when I was living in Tucson Arizona, somebody transferred to my work group from Chicago, and in talking with her, it turned out that her aunt was a nun and teacher at OLA and survived the fire but had permanant lung damage and still had lung trouble. In the December 1993 issue in Chicago magazine there was a big article on the OLA fire. Last week I was in Chicago and drove to see OLA. It felt eerie to see it and it looked so peaceful, hard to believe that this tragedy happened there.
