About me: |
At the time of the fire, i was a 7th grade student at St. Mary School in Crown Point, Ind. Our school had an older building similar to OLA with one fire escape. I had just moved from that building to a newer, one story building, but always considered the older building to be a 'fire trap'. I remember after the fire that our nun led us in prayer for the fire victims and their families. I worked in Chicago for 20 years as an FBI Agent and would have been in the area of OLA many times without realizing it. I suppose time diminishes the memory of such a tragedy except for those personally involved and so I had all but forgotten about the horrible tragedy of OLA. I recently read an article about the 50th anniversary, including mention of the book, To Sleep With the Angels, which I bought and read. I'm now reading Remembrances of the Angels and I feel an unexplainable bond to all those involved in this tragedy. I currently have two sons, ages 9 & 11 (4th & 5th grade) and so I feel even closer to those who were victims of OLA. I've recently been out to the sight and prayed at the memorial there. I would like to become an active member of FOLA and receive your newsletter. I hope to meet as many members as possible, while always realizing that I am a friend and not a 'true' member. God Bless, Sincerely Mike Ryan.
